Bone Marrow Transplantation
Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT, Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant) is the transplantation of blood stem cells derived from the bone marrow or blood either of the patients themselves or their compatible related donors. Stem cell transplantation is a medical procedure in the fields of Hematology and Oncology, most often performed in patients with diseases of the blood, bone marrow, or certain types of cancer. For example, Leukemia, Lymphoma, Thalassaemia and other BMT indications are successfully treated by BMT in Turkey.
Bone marrow transplants are successfully performed in both adults and children in Turkish hospitals.
Each bone marrow donor candidate, both local and foreign, undergoes a rigorous medical and ethical evaluation to determine suitability and compatibility.
Usually, foreign patients have to travel to Turkey with related donors - up to 4th-degree relatives - but there are exceptions. For example, if a patient in need of a bone marrow transplant cannot find a suitable related donor at home, they can use the services of the Turkish National Donor Bank.
